The coma and convulsions research line, abbreviated to Coco, was initiated by Prof. Boele van Hensbroek and Prof. van Woensel in 2015 and funded by a NWO grant. The focus of this project, much like the anaemia research line, was to study the aetiology of coma and convulsions in children in resource poor settings using conventional and state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques. As a proof-of-concept study, a pilot study was initiated in Malawi, Uganda and Rwanda, coordinated by Arthur Edridge who received an AMC PhD Scholarship to continue this work as a PhD student. This pilot study has recently finished and the results are currently being published.
